Technical difficulties behind us. On to a better day!
Much like in today's story, letting past mistakes hinder future actions wrongly restricts capability. Driving forward, doing better today what was failed yesterday is the best way to live.

Technical difficulty is currently preventing me from publishing the current issue of Afterburn. I hope to have the issue resolved this evening so I can bring you the great fiction you so desire. I apologize for the delay and hope you will bear with me while I sort this out.

Due to a large number of exceptional submissions our publication schedule is full through next Spring. We are still evaluating several submissions and as such do not yet have a final publication schedule. For this reason we do not yet have a date that we will be reopening for submissions. When a core belief deteriorates into factions the results aren't typically very peaceable. Even as is seen in religions that tout the golden rule and love for your neighbor factions cause dissension and often times outright conflict. Today's story carries that dissension into a future dominated by one religious faction at the expense of all others. When carried to extremes what is the potential outcome?

Amazon has announced the long awaited arrival of the Kindle 2! New slimmer design, longer battery life and more storage are some of the enhancements of the new device. Amazon notes the mission of their Digital Text Platform as : "Every book ever in print electronically in under sixty seconds."
That is a lofty goal to aspire to. I am hopeful they will be able to achieve it.
Of course I am somewhat bias towards digital publishing but I believe it has several added benefits over traditional publishing including less paper used and freer access to published works. When we can be more ecological in our reading and spread published works to a broader audience we are doing good things.

Due to the descent of the Afterburn forums into an abyss of SPAM registrants it has become necessary to employ a new tactic. I have registered a new group on Facebook for Afterburn. This will have two added benefits. It will allow me to better manage discussions and prevent SPAM registrants and it will give me an additional promotional vehicle for the site.
I hope you all will tune in and help broaden the discussion at our new Facebook site.

Father's love their daughters and want the best for them. Sometimes that love is overprotective and a father cannot see that they are keeping their daughters from their true passions. Today's story is about a daughter overcoming her father's predetermined course for her life.
On a personal note, I am again experiencing the joy of being the father of a beautiful baby girl. Yesterday at 4:29 PM my wife and I welcomed our third daughter into the world. As with my other two daughters this birth has unsurfaced in me a wealth of love that I did not know possible.
This story closes the book on the 2008 Afterburn publication schedule. Over the past year our audience has grown significantly and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you, our readers, for the support you have given us. I am looking forward to 2009. We have issues lined up that I am sure will satisfy your cravings for action based speculative fiction. We will be re-opening to submissions in February and I am looking forward to continuing to publish great fiction. I wish all of you and yours a Merry Christmas and a happy conclusion to 2008. Onward to 2009!

In today's world of rolloer coaster oil prices and constant discussion of alternative energy sources it is hard not to speculate on what the future holds for our planet. Today's story takes that speculation into the next century and beyond. An intruiging look at the state of humanity a century hence.

Exotic, emotional and transformative are the main ways to describe today's story. What hope is there for a society built on the castoffs of another? There is the hope of their children. Each generation has the capacity to be greater and more compassionate than the previous. Today's story shows us how that may be acheived.

A review by Nat Thompson
In reading this book I found myself reminded of chicken soup; hearty and fulfilling as a meal but at the same time predictable and not very risky. This book is technically very well done. The mechanics are precise. The story arcs establish each character, provide a conflict for those characters and in the end the characters come away changed.
The subject matter is well researched. It is obvious that the author has paid special attention to learning and understanding the intricacies of the subjects she is depicting. She is true to the subject be it voodoo rituals, lycanthropy, or even modern day necromancy. Suspension of disbelief is achieved readily through the competent and knowledgeable handling of the occult and arcane.
As I’ve said all the proper mechanics of literature are in place; a la Chicken Soup. The plots are interesting and have potential to truly engross the reader in their originality. However, something seems missing. A spice or flair, if you will, that would transform this book from Chicken Soup to Gumbo.
The dialog at times feels a little staged and the characters do not surprise the reader. They seem to be following a recipe and so their actions and even thoughts follow a predictable progression. I would have liked a few more twists along the road throughout the book. If some of the characters had been more surprising or unpredictable I would have certainly found the subject matter hard to put down.
As it happens I found the book to be a pleasantly typical read. It is a comfortable book that the reader can curl up with and be assured of what is to come.

.
I hope you will consider supporting this worthy cause and join me in congratulating Karen in her selection for inclusion in the Anthology.
